Jack Black in Run Ronnie Run

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Can't we attract better business than this? What a scam. Calling this a game of skill is a dubious claim.

A Regular Murder

Counting Crows never disappoint. The new album is fantastic.

Same can be said for The Black Crowes. Douchebag record label has disabled embedding. Cockknocks.

The Obama Speech

Here. So I'm not nearly as political as most of my friends. Growing up, this sort of thing was never important - government was something to be bitched at, not actually changed. I struggle with this because I feel I should be more involved and take a more active role. On the other hand, it's hard not to feel like it doesn't make a lick of difference. Anyway, my old boss, someone I still work closely with and consider a good friend, made the above linked video required viewing for me. She's not even a citizen; those Europeans can't seem to help themselves. Anyway, despite my ever increasing cynicism, the speech made me want to believe. I know there are writers and illusions but the unassuming way in which he talked to several groups stuck with me. I thought the part about white folks and their idea about crime in our cities was refreshing. So lots of white folks are scared of the "city". The nightly news is full of stories convincing us it's impossible to enjoy a night in the city without getting robbed or raped. It's easy to write these people off as being racist or whatever. When Obama said that people are tired of their fear of crime being labelled as racism, I thought it was true, but also a way of getting through to people. I know people, good people, who live in nice suburban places, who are afraid of walking around in cities. I always wanted to dismiss these people, these products of paranoia that political groups capitalize on. But they're just people...they want to send their kids to good schools, they want space from their neighbors, they want to feel safe. Obama's speech seemed like it would reach these folks. Rather than alienate them and make them feel as though they are backwards and irrationally fearful, Obama acknowledged that we need some work. His speeched reminded me that we are all Americans and all in this together. We all want our piece, that part of the dream. Someone has to reach these folks, convince them that they're not about to be bombed by people with skin darker than theirs. These people just want to feel safe and they don't, so they vote for what they think is the best way to achieve that. Obama sounded like a unifier in the speech above, someone who knew how to talk to every different kind of American. Someone who could see that just because someone voted for Bush in the last election, that doesn't mean that they're too far gone or not worth trying to convince that they can come around. There's lots of rambling here, but the speech affected me in a real, real way. It made me think that there was hope, it made me cry, and it made me feel like an American.

So I was going back and taking a look at some of our older posts, and I noticed that a post on Slomming in late 2006/early 2007 picked up a large number of comments. Weird. Go check it out.

Happy Easter!!

It's Time to Believe

Hope for a Sabres playoff birth is stronger than it has been in weeks now that the Flyers got smacked around 7-1 against the Penguins this afternoon. Both teams have 9 games to go and the Sabres are down by a point.

To help add to the excitement I dug up an audio clip from way back. Attached on the back end is a funky WBEN commercial.

Jesus Christ

that shit didn't take long at all. Buy that shit here.

It only gets more embarrasing from here...

Reading an article from the Times this morning, we have the following tidbit:

When she called Ms. Lewis, they discussed the client’s reputation as a “difficult” man who sometimes asked the prostitutes “to do things you might not think were safe,” Ms. Lewis said.

This seems to signal coming pain for the family of Cliente Nueve, as it is now decidedly a sellers market for Spitzer sex stories. Presumably somebody willing to sell their body, is willing to sell tales about sex.

Client 9

As ole' Elliot was referred to in an affidavit released to the press, we are reminded that making too many enemies in the world is hazardous. Let's get ready for the abject pandering of politicians who are "shocked and appalled" at the very same behavior they have been good enough to not be caught on tape arranging.

I do not trust my government

A little Wired article about a whistle-blower, here. Another accusation of open access to our texts, voicemails, etc handed to big brother by a "major wireless carrier". There's an interesting link to an article discussing Verizon Wireless lawsuits last year. Apparently, Verizon Wireless feels that suing them due to their helping the gov't spy on us violates their first amendment right. I'm no first amendment rights lawyer, but damn, that shit ain't rights. Also, Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) wants the feds to back off of Roger Clemens and focus on more important things, which may or may not include spying on our asses, thanks SI. I wonder if there is a candidate running for office who will help put an end to spying on AMERICANS without cause. *sigh* this is depressing.
